In my world, certain things are inevitable with fall: cooler temperatures, pumpkin spice available at your local Trader Joe’s, my mom blasting Christmas music in the car as early as September, and—perhaps most predictable of all—buying a new Free People jacket to wear until the new year.
While some people kick off the fall holidays with a trip to the apple bin, my fall doesn’t begin until I add a cozy new jacket from Free People to my closet. Last year, my favorite was the Pippa Packable Puffer Jacket, my go-to travel jacket. This season, however, I’m all about the Free People Chloe Jacket ($198).
I’m far from the first to fall in love with this comfy jacket: Not only is it trending on TikTok, but it’s also one of Free People’s best-selling pieces. With its slim fit, quilted construction, and wide variety of patterns, it’s easy to see why this piece has garnered so much attention and earned a permanent place in my wardrobe. Here’s what makes this Free People jacket one of the best coats for fall 2024.
What I love about the Chloe jacket by Free People
First and foremost, I love that this jacket is endlessly comfortable. It’s made from a lightweight cotton-rayon material with a polyester fill that’s plush and soft; it’s like getting all the benefits of a cozy down jacket in the structure of a puffy cardigan. The material isn’t so heavy that I feel overweight or constricted, but it’s also thick enough that I can comfortably wear it in cold winter temperatures. The versatility of this jacket is also endless—whether I want to layer it with a basic tee or pair it with a chunky sweater, the oversized cut makes it functional enough to pair with a variety of outfits. And I appreciate that despite the higher price tag, I feel like I’m getting the most bang for my buck with this Free People jacket. I’ve been wearing it nonstop this fall (even in 70-degree weather), and I know I’ll have no problem wearing it into the colder winter months, too. Thanks to the floral design, I could probably even wear it all spring long!
The lightweight construction is so unique that I almost forget I have the jacket on. Plus, the convenient packaging makes it great for travel. Whether I’m going on a road trip or flying to another country, this style won’t take up much space in my carry-on suitcase.
What is worth noting
Unlike traditional zip-up or button-up jackets, this style features hook-and-eye closures that hold the two sides of the jacket together, giving it a more closed look. Occasionally, the hooks come undone and I have to reattach them; overall, I find myself fiddling with this jacket more than I would with standard zippers. The Dolman silhouette also gives the jacket a looser fit. The looser fit gives the jacket a lived-in look, which I like, but other reviewers have noted that it’s too big for their preferences. I recommend consulting Free People’s style guide to find your perfect size and consider sizing down if you’re worried about it being too big.
Who is the Chloe Jacket by Free People suitable for?
If you want a jacket that you can wear comfortably in even the most challenging transitional weather—from chilly mornings to warm afternoons to chilly nights—this Free People jacket is your new go-to. It’s breathable enough to keep you from feeling weighed down by the heavy material, but its quilted design also provides plenty of warmth and insulation in colder temperatures. With a wide range of patterns and colors to choose from, you’ll have no trouble finding your dream style—or even stocking up on multiple versions of the jacket (the more, the merrier!).
